IR35: HMRC promise soft landing?
I read at the weekend that our new Chancellor has spoken to HMRC too seek assurances that the new off payroll rules get introduced gently. They have already softened their stance by backing down on applying the rules retrospectively, which will be a relief for many contractors. https://www.ft.com/content/0f9bb8d2-564b-11ea-abe5-8e03987b7b20
HMRC offer their own assessment tool which over on gov.uk which can be used to assess whether you are deemed employed are not. HMRC guarantee to stand by its results but it will only get it right 85% of the time. In a twist of fate, 85% of contractors do not trust the results https://www.recruitment-international.co.uk/blog/2017/05/85-percent-of-contractors-do-not-trust-hmrcs-ir35-tool-research-reveals
So, how to summarise? I’ll leave you with the words of Harry Callahan.
“I know what you're thinking. 'Did he fire six shots or only five'? Well to tell you the truth, in all this excitement, i kind of lost track myself. But being that this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?'
Well do ya, punk?”
